NOTE: I had the privilege to witness the honor, courage and commitment of our young men and women in the military (from the USA and Europe) when I visited the U.S. Central Command in the Middle East.   The trip, organized by the Department of Defense is known as the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference and included 45 Business Leaders from across the nation. To commemorate the trip, Eden Florist had a Soccer Ball Drive for the school children of Tadjoura, Djibouti (South Africa) – To see the pictorial essays, visit: http://www.edenflorist.com/photogallerytwo.asp

Halloween is one of the most popular holidays of the year.  In fact it is the second most successful holiday in terms of retail sales.

Here are some fun facts about Halloween:

  • Halloween was actually a Celtic holiday. Originally called Samhain meaning or “end of summer” Halloween marked the official end of summer.

Did you know? Before Pumpkins, potatoes and turnips were used to create Jack-O-Lanterns. Irish children would carve and light them to use  on Halloween.

Trick or treating had its roots in Europe. In fact, the act of asking for food in exchange for something called “souling”  started in the 9th century. People would give the poor “soul cakes” on all Saints Day (November 2nd) in exchange for the promise to pray or dead relatives.

Florascope for Scorpio

Scorpio: Oct. 24 – Nov. 22

Scorpio

Scorpio, known as the most intense of the zodiac signs, are passionate, perceptive and focused, and at times can be possessive and even display a jealous side.  Scorpios have strong convictions which at times can be annoying because they don’t easily compromise.  They are sensitve, and when they believe in something or become inspired will go to the ends of the earth to fulfill their passions.

According to astrology, Scorpios have a higher probability of being geniuses than persons born under the other 11 signs of the zodiac.

The sensual passional Scorpio is attracted to deep, dark red flowers such as roses, Carnations, and richly colored chrysantemums.  Red peopnies make Scorpio’s heart skip a beat appealling to their highly sensual nature. Tropical flowering plants such as birds of paradise, parakeet protea and anthurrium will nurture their sensitive side.

Scorpios colors are Dark red, brown, black, crimson, burgundy, maroon and their birthstone is the topaz.

Decorating/Design Tips and Trends

orange gerbera daisyWhen cutting flowers, cut at a sharp angle. This increases the “opening” of the stem allowing water to be better absorbed. The flowers will not rest flush on the bottom of the container, which allows water to penetrate the stem. Once cut, place directly in water.

Be sure to stop by Eden Florist and pick up a bunch of cut flowers today!

Care and Handling of Flowers

"Care and Handling of Flowers"Cloudy or discolored water in vases is an indication of decomposition and Bacterial growth.  Change water in your container every day or two, using fresh warm water.  This will open the stems, allowing the water to flow to the flower.  Your fresh flowers will last longer.

Water that sits in a vase with stems of flowers also becomes stagnant and after a day or so begins to smell.

Be sure and call or stop by Eden Florist for your next bunch of flowers.
